Read the following introduction to a student's writing. Decide if this person is writing a narrative, opinion or informational piece. In your marble notebook write down which type of writing you think it is and explain how you know.
Maria and Joseph were not only best friends but also brother and sister. They are only 2 years apart so they play together all of the time. Joseph is the older sibling who like to be in charge and make sure that Maria is safe. Maria is the responsible sibling who always makes sure that they are following the rules. One day Maria and Joseph were playing in their backyard. Their backyard has plenty of trees which were perfect for a tree-house. The trees were very tall and just the right space apart for a tree house. They had no problem using their dad's hammer and nails to get old pieces of wood into the side of one tree. They were going to use these pieces of wood as the steps, kind of like a ladder. Joseph decided that he was going to test out the steps so he started climbing up. Suddenly, the nail on the top step popped out and Joseph came tumbling down.

Below is a fourth grade writing prompt. Read the prompt carefully and decide if you would use the narrative writing elements or the opinion writing elements. In your marble notebook write down which set of elements you would follow if you had to answer this prompt and explain how your know. ****You do NOT have to actually answer the prompt.
Your school is considering canceling all field trips because they cost a lot of money and some families cannot afford to pay for them. Some people say that this is a good idea and that the school is thinking about the families' needs. Others say that field trips are important for students' learning and should not be cancelled. Write a paper saying if you think that students should go on field trips or not. Use specific reasons and examples to support your answer.

Good bye January and HELLO February!!!!!!!
We've been talking about supporting opinions with STRONG reasons. Let's just say that we were going to write an essay giving our opinions on whether or not we should have Saturday school. Below is a list of possible reasons to OPPOSE or go against Saturday school. Which reason would be considered STRONG and explain why you chose that reason.
-Saturday cartoons are too good to miss.
-Students need time to rest and spend time with their families.
-Students stay up too late playing video games on Friday nights so they will be tired.

Your warm up for today is to read the following passage. Think about the theme. What lesson could we learn from reading this story? Write down in your marble notebook what you think the theme could be and EXPLAIN why you have this idea. Be sure to justify your thinking with details from the story.
The Lions team had a losing record. No matter how hard they tried, they could never win a game. The only stand-out was Karson, who played well at first base. Karson was so good in fact that other teams were constantly trying to recruit him.
Even though it was tempting, Karson would never leave his team. The Lions were his friends and were the first baseball team on which he played. Karson was determined to stay with his team and to help make it better.

Please be sure that you are being respectful and cooperative with Ms. Golt today. I expect that everyone will show her just exactly why Wilbur is the greatest school. She will be awarding team points. The team from each class with the most points at the end of the day will have lunch with me tomorrow.
Today's warm up is:
Please write a $2.00 summary of your weekend. Each word is worth ten cents. Your summary may not "cost" more than two dollars. Spaces do NOT count. Your summary should include the most important things that you did this weekend. "I did not do anything this weekend" is not an acceptable summary.
Have a great day and remember our school's 2 rules---1. Don't be mean. 2. No hands on---ever. I will see you tomorrow.
